The Purposeful Pursuit For Inventory Yields Knits, Magazines

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Welcome back to What's In Store, a Racked feature where we fill you in on what's in stock at the city's best stores right this second.

Inventory isn't the kind of shop you find by accident. Tucked at the end of an alley sandwiched between the Bowery and Second Avenue, you have to be on a mission to find yourself in the small but sunny menswear boutique (or on your way to the now-shuttered Oaxaca Taqueria—tear). Unsurprisingly, the store fields a lot of calls from shoppers who can't seem to track down Extra Place.

Once inside, the savvy menswear hunter—or his generous gift hunter—is rewarded with the scent of a custom incense made by Joya and a selection that ranges from Inventory's own magazine to hand knit cardigans. We stopped by on a chilly morning to have a look at the store—which operates a unit in Vancouver, as well as outposts within Dover Street Market London and Tokyo—and found Red Wing boots that would look handsome tromping through today's snow and more than one obscure glossy.
