The 3.1 Phillip Lim sample sale preview opened this morning, quickly drawing a crowd of excited shoppers (there is a clipboard at the entrance, but the sale opens to the public tomorrow). Inside, coats and bags must be checked, and there are absolutely no photos allowed (we've gathered product shots in the gallery above of actual items seen at the sale).
Upon entering, shoppers are greeted with tables of bags and accessories. Large bags (including plenty of the Pashli and 31 Hour styles) are $450, medium bags are $300, small bags are $200 (lots of the 31 Minute style in different colors and materials), and clutches are $150. Even better than tons of discounted bags from the brand? The promise of constant restocking.
Other accessories include beautiful bib necklaces for $300, and a rather small selection of scarves and sunglasses for $75. The belts and gloves are going for $50, but the few pair of gloves with fur we saw are $100.
Shoes are a real score, at just $100 per pair. Flat and heeled styles were available, with the bulk of the selection in size 37.
Onto the clothing, which includes pieces from Lim's first collection in 2005 up to clothing from spring 2013. There are a ton of styles to go through, with clothing in every size. If you were a fan of his spring 2013 collection, this sale has your name on it. We saw quite a few things from the collection including the Nueva York silk top, the Carded Moto Jacket, and the Shredded Shirtdress in indigo, all priced at $175. Knits are huge at this sale as well and will run you either $150 for an older or more simple style, or $250 for something more recent, like the Fall 2012 Rollneck Pullover in cornflower blue.
There are trousers and denim for $75, blazers and gowns for $175, and leather jackets for $500. Each piece is marked with its price, so you might pick up one leather moto jacket that costs $500, while a buttery leather trench is marked $350. For $350 you can also get a pair of leather trousers in tan or white, or drawstring sequin shorts.
In terms of outerwear, there is not a massive selection, and coats are still pretty pricey. If you pick up a shearling, be prepared to pay $900, while other wool and faux fur coats are $400.
Menswear is limited to two racks and a dozen or so shoes. The pricing for the menswear is comparable to women's. A wool coat is marked at $300.
There is no fitting room, but there is a corner with mirrors designated for trying on. Remember that this sale has both womenswear and menswear, so if you do plan on trying on, perhaps throwing on a fitted tank and leggings is a good move.
