Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

There are two Helmut Lang sample sales this week: one at Clothingline and one at Chelsea Market, and they both kick off tomorrow morning. At the Clothingline sale, which we attended a preview of this evening, prices start at $39 for tees and cap off at $399 for leather jackets.

The short version: the sale is blazer heaven. From relaxed white linen styles with contrast leather details to fall 2013 graphic print blazers, there's no shortage of styles to choose from. They're all $199, but three printed styles labeled "Promo Blazers," which are repeats from the last sale, are marked down to $99.

A wall of sweaters is priced at $79, and includes chunky turtleneck styles fit for winter weather and lightweight basics for layering. Knit tees and tanks are $39.

A vast assortment of dresses is available, like signature draped silhouettes with longsleeves and a few stand-out chiffon styles from the spring 2013 collection priced from $119 to $179. A diverse selection of blouses for $89 features simple chiffon tops, silk draped tees, and utilitarian button-down shirts.

We were disappointed with the small selection of pants. Black leather pants in sizes 0 and 2 are $299, while the lightweight twill trousers in sizes four and six are $129. Two racks full of skinny corduroys and red waxed jeans are available in most sizes and priced at $79.

The only selection more limited than pants is the outerwear. We only saw one piece we would consider outerwear: a grey felt coat for $299. However, we were told there might be a new shipment arriving with denim and new outerwear styles on day two.

Everything is organized by size, making for an orderly shopping experience (for now, at least) and there's a large dressing room full of clothing racks and mirrors. If you spend $150 or more (which won't be hard), you'll get a free gift with purchase; spend $500 or more and get two free gifts. Choose from racer back tanks, triangle bras, or a camisole in the sizes of your choice. The sale opens at 11am tomorrow.—Christina DeSmet
