The gloomy NYC weather was the perfect backdrop for today's BLK DNM sample sale. Set in the Openhouse gallery space (of cryptic Jay Z tweet fame) BLK DNM has to have one of the coolest sale set ups we've seen in a while, as its stark white walls play well against the moody denim and leather, and its pipe clothing racks added just a touch of "devil may care." But you care. And that's why we spent our afternoon there. Read on for our notes on the scene.
The much sought after leather pieces are front and center upon entering, with deeply discounted leather skirts for $150 and a variety of leather jackets for $300-$500. Men's and women's styles include white, navy, and oxblood biker jackets, cropped black bombers, and leather vests. We also spotted an amazing leather dress for $500—a totally worth it splurge if it's still there.
The best deals are on the lower level, where the room is split down the middle—men's on the left and women's on the right. Tables full of $50 jeans are stacked by style and size, making it easy to navigate. For women, there are no low-rise styles available, but mid-rise and high-rise styles come in an array of washes. The dark wash, black, white, grey, and a silvery metallic were getting a lot of attention from shoppers last we checked.
Bins on the floor are filled with men's and women's sweaters, and range from chunky rib knits to lightweight wool cardigans—all priced at $70. Sweatshirts are nearby in the $40 bins. Jersey tees, at $20, are home against the back wall.
Tailored blazers for men and women run $150. And next to them, $50 pants hang tightly packed on the racks. Noteworthy women's styles include a double-breasted army green blazer and pinstripe option perfect for fall. The non-leather outerwear is $200-$300. Making our way around the section, we couldn't help but fall in love with a grey plaid coat that almost every woman was trying on.
With three full length mirrors placed around the sale, but no privacy for trying on, be prepared to change in front of everyone. We heard some styles will have more sizes restocked, but that there won't be any new styles introduced to the sale.
When we left the preview around 12:30 pm, we were surprised that no line had formed outside the sale, which opened to the public at 1:00 pm.
This sale runs until the 14th.—Christina DeSmet
