This morning, WWD dropped a bomb by reporting that Barneys will launch a permanent off-price website on Monday, at Barneyswarehouse.com. Daniella Vitale, Barney's chief merchant and executive VP, explained: "The online business is explosive and the fastest-growing business we have. It will be no different for the off-price component. The warehouse sale is [a factory] outlet in the same way that Barneys.com is a flagship and should reflect the Madison Avenue location." Our sister site has more specifics on what kinds of merchandise will be up for grabs when it debuts.
But here's what this means for the physical warehouse sale. The next one will continue as planned at the Chelsea Co-op from February 14th through February 24th. And then things get wonky. At the summer sale, which we reported would be held one block away in August and September, "merchandise will turn heavily toward men's. Vitale said Barneys will be able to use the space for warehouse sales on a recurring basis."
Vitale adds: "The origin of the warehouse sale was as a men's sale. While men's tailored clothing is a little harder to sell, in some ways it's going back to the original concept." The story itself remains ambiguous on what the ratio of men's to women's merchandise will be, as well as how frequently the sales will be held. (The word "recurring" was used, rather than "bi-annual.")
But one thing's clear: Anyone who relishes the opportunity to pillage through racks and racks of women's designer merchandise, and tear through tons of shelves of high-end shoes, should do so in February, or forever hold your peace.
