New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Kiran Rai founded her global lifestyle brand Sir Alistair Rai in 2006. The line is a contemporary clothing and accessories brand that exemplifies Rai's commitment to cultural awareness and unique products, with intricate Southeast Asian-inspired designs embedded on quality materials like silk, viscose, and cashmere. Here, she shows us Namaste Bookshop, a quaint store in Union Square.
When you enter Namaste Bookshop, be prepared: The noise of the city fades away and suddenly, you're entering a different world—one with incense and soft chimes and music that instantly calms the chatter in your head. It's like nirvana for self-professed New Age disciples like me! Astrology, tarot, philosophy, spiritual journeys, energy healing: Whatever your New Age vice (or if you've got many, as do I), you'll find a way to feed it here. I love that I can walk in and attend a lecture on healing, find a meaningful gift for a loved one or a book on manifesting change in my life.I like to think of Namaste Bookshop as the place to go to honor all of my lives: to figure out the ones I've lived in the past, to deal with whatever the present one is handing me, and most importantly, to hear what the sun, moon, stars, pendulums, tarot, psychic energies, runes, chakras and numbers have to say about my future. And the best part? I can actually say that to any of the lovely people that work there, and it sounds perfectly normal to them. Namaste, Namaste Bookshop!
