Where This Florist Finds Top-Notch Ribbon on W. 38th Street

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Brittany Asch is a Brooklyn-based floral designer at BRRCH. Her work is inspired by Dutch still life paintings, English gardens, and uncommon beauty. In addition to working with some of the industry's leading florists, she has also worked behind-the-scenes for runway shows, museum events, Martha Stewart-covered weddings, music videos, and Fifth Avenue storefronts. Here, she shows us her favorite spot in Midtown West for top of the line ribbons and more.

When it comes to bouquets, ribbon is the red lipstick. No matter what, it enhances the flowers and makes them even more beautiful. Because it's the finishing touch, I spend time finding a perfect match for each individual client. After I survey the goods in the Flower District and need some ribbon, I'll take a 10-minute walk uptown to the Garment District. There are several spots I frequent, but Hyman Hendler & Sons (opened in 1900) makes me feel like I'm looking at Marie Antoinette's personal collection. My imagination runs wild in that shop, which is all the better for my work. They have the most beautiful vintage ribbons and one of the widest assortments of colors and sizes for velvets and grosgrains. You need to make a huge bow? This is your spot. The staff is so accommodating and welcoming. It's really just one of those places that makes NYC what it is.
