New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Kevin Kearney is a man who wears many hats. Right now, he's managing director at marketing firm ALLDAYEVERYDAY and partner in his sister Anna Sheffield's jewelry company. (She told us about her favorite unlikely shopping destination last year.) But he's also done time in various kitchen, from washing dishes at Durango Diner in Colorado to being a Chef de Partie at Bouley in NYC. "That part of my life seems like another dimension in time," he says, but he still loves to cook in NYC.

I first fell in love with Meat Hook in Brooklyn—tucked beneath the BQE, near the corner of Frost and Leonard in Williamsburg— a few Easters ago, when I was in need of a large piece of pork. I succeeded in that mission and cooked a Coca Cola-and-cinnamon-glazed ham that would make you want to slap your mama.
I also fell in love with their perfectly curated mixed offerings, including freshly butchered meat, cutlery, local produce and even cooking lessons from Brooklyn Kitchen. They have succeeded where others have failed; it never feels like it's too many things at once. Somehow they have created a shop that allows you to leave with everything you need to create an entire meal, from the actual ingredients to the tools and skills to do so. I have to tip my hat to their succeeding in such an off-the-beaten-path location.
