Matta in Soho Sells Beachy Style All Year Round

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Welcome to Shops Illustrated, a Racked feature in which artist Jennifer Hoyden sketches New York City stores. For each entry, she'll draw a street view, an interior look, and some items currently hanging on the racks.

The Matta shop on the edge of Soho makes Lafayette feel more like a shoreline than a borderline. Beachwear is their trademark, but the holiday wardrobe that they sell here fits just as well for a New York staycation. The Dupatta scarves come in a variety of sizes and weights, from gauzy cotton to soft wool, and many of the brand's designs are perennial, with just a change in fabrics.

Among the skirts, kurtas, slip dresses and such by Matta, there are also some offerings on the racks from guest brands. This summer there were pieces from Hoss, Velvet, and the nearly-impossible-to-find Mina Perhönen.
