New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Christopher Barnard is the fashion news and market editor for V and VMan, and he's also been playing the piano since he was a kid. Though he can't quite fit a baby grand in his own apartment, he luckily has a generous and patient friend who can. Here's where he buys his sheet music in Times Square.
I used to work in Times Square and on summer Fridays I would love to browse and shop for sheet music at Colony Music on 49th Street and Broadway. I've played the piano since I was 6 and try to keep it up as much as I can given the space and time constraints of working in fashion and living in an East Village studio apartment. The building itself has this great original neon sign and is a relic (in the best sense) of the American Bandstand-y, post-war Times Square. The selection of music is mouthwateringly vast and I have always found about 20 more songs or band anthologies than what I came looking for, from original ragtime scores to the new Fiona Apple.
It's big enough to get totally lost in even in the middle of the Time Square bedlam, and of course there's the requisite quirky staff and magic marker signs about putting things away in order that are older than my parents. As for putting my hauls to good use, a kind friend has always had an open door policy with her baby grand with the caveat that I drop some musical knowledge each visit on her two little girls. The biggest hit so far has been The Sound of Music score, and we're working through the Lord of the Rings and Complete Queen Songbook, all from Colony Music.
