DKNY's first sample sale in over a decade opened to the public today at 260 Fifth Avenue. We stopped by around lunch time to no lines and a happy buzz of shoppers perusing a selection of Donna Karan's sleek urban looks at reasonable prices.
If you're trying to bulk up your fall wardrobe, this is the place to do it. Everything is approximately 70% off retail. Of course there's plenty of DKNY basics, but there's also a vast assortment of fall coats and a surprising array of covetable statement pieces. If you're after a true bargain, you'll want to bee-line toward the shoes and accessories, which are going fast.
We loved a patriotic-hued tweed moto jacket for $125 and its coordinating shorts for $40. Some other unexpected gems were a long sleeved black-and-gold lace dress for $85, a trompe d'oeil sequin bubble skirt for $40, and pop-art–inspired cropped pants, also for $40. There were also plenty of eye-catching fall coats, including a camel and black color-blocked cape and a trench-style coats for $125 each. For less memorable pieces, you should focus on the basics, including plain cotton tees and casual pants, ranging from $30 to $50.
Unfortunately, the Donna Karan Collection racks (near the fitting rooms) were already decimated with nothing enticing left for the masses. A rack near the cash registers had the promising label "Donna Karan Runway $500", but was stocked with the same DKNY coats that were available on other racks.
For the fellas, the highlight was a large selection of black suiting for $125 in a spacious area. If you need some new suiting, this sale (and its lack of crowds) definitely makes this worth a trip.
If you do stop by, hone in on the bargain accessories for both men and women. All shoes range from $30 to $50. We also spotted tons of sunglasses, belts, cufflinks, ties, scarves, and hosiery ranging from $5 to $25.
The fitting room line was totally manageable and, in a rarity, we spotted staffers helping shoppers locate additional sizes. Due to the lack of crowds, we have our fingers crossed for a late-week price drop. The sale continues through Saturday August 25th at 260 Fifth Avenue, between 28th and 29th Streets. Bags and coats must be checked, cash and credit accepted. For hours and more details, check out our dealfeed. —Kiran
