Hats on Hats on Hats: Block Headwear Reopens on Houston

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to fedora heaven. Since the last time we checked up on the hat craze in Nolita, a change worth noting is the relocation of Block Headwear to 89 E. Houston St from around the corner. If the new location looks familiar, it's because beauty boutique Georgia last occupied the space. If it doesn't, that's probably because of the dramatic new yellow-and-white facade. The store actually soft-launched in May, but the eye-catching signage was only completed a few weeks ago.

Designer Ciomi McCabe, who launched the brand in 2000, likes to mix up textures and fabrics to add variety to each design, offering "crushable" styles as well as more structured hats. The price range is anywhere between $40 to 65, and each hat is made with natural materials. They feature large brimmed hats and fedoras for summer, and say that caps and knitwear sell well for them during the wintertime. Currently, their "Sagg" fedora is their number one seller among men.

Although Block Headwear is a menswear brand, they do have a strong women's following. A tip from McCabe: a men's size medium fits most women that come in. Employees noted that women often come in to buy their guys a new hat, and end up leaving with a new accessory of their own.—Tanya Loss
