Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

GREENWICH VILLAGE—Another independent bookstore has just succumbed to the Kindle: Jeremiah's Vanishing New York delivers the bummer news that Partners & Crime on Greenwich Avenue is closing after 18 years in business. If you've never been inside, this is what you'll forever be missing come September: "One of the store's stocked shelves serves as a secret entrance to a back room where the shop hosts monthly performances of "old-time radio plays." HERALD SQUARE—Next summer, the city will lose three fast food restaurants and gain a lot of Crocs. Crain's reports that the Pizza Hut, Tad's Broiled Steaks, and Tim Horton's on West 34th Street are all closing to make room for a Croc's store, where the sweet smell of plastic footwear will probably be mixed with the lingering scent of cheap eats.
