Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

This is Store Sidekicks, an occasional end-of-the-week feature in which we profile the fuzzy wuzzy creatures who inhabit shops around the city. If you'd like to nominate your favorite store animal, drop us a line at

POP has been a Williamsburg fixture since 2005. The boutique stocks womenswear and accessories from the likes of BB Dakota, Dolce Vita, and more, and one of its other big draws is Oscar, its five-year-old Keeshond. Store owner Sheila Sharma says that despite his mellow demeanor, Oscar is known as the "King of Grand Street," because he's always keeping watch over the store and greets the customers as they come in.

Oscar's favorite hangouts are outside on the store stoop and underneath the clothing racks. Even though he's friendly, he might not budge when you call him—unless you have treats, of course, or just so happen to be the mailman. Oscar also really loves children, and volunteers his services as a babysitter when moms are busy in the dressing room. However, he likes to get in on the action, too. Sheila says that Oscar never objects to playing dress-up.
