Dalaga Dog Lolo Motto Is a Much-Loved Senior Citizen

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

This is Store Sidekicks, an occasional end-of-the-week feature in which we profile the fuzzy wuzzy creatures who inhabit shops around the city. If you'd like to nominate your favorite store animal, drop us a line at tips@racked.com.

Lolo Motto, the resident 10-year-old beagle in Greenpoint boutique Dalaga, suffers from oldest-child syndrome, according to co-owners and sisters Mary and Michelle Mangiliman. Even though they both have children, they still consider him their first. The love for Lolo goes beyond his big family: His fans among the store's customers occasionally ask if they can take him for a walk. They even look for him in the new Nolita location, but for now, a picture on the wall will have to suffice.

Lolo is named after the Tagalog word for "Grandpa," since his face was wrinkly as a puppy. This is especially ironic, because Mary, Michelle, and marketing director Liz Hull all describe him as a total senior citizen. "He's at a point in his life where he knows who he is and he's not going to apologize for it," Liz said.

Often Lolo can be found splayed out in front of the door, watching the people walking past on Franklin Street. He sits there so often that the girls have to clean the glass every day to wipe away the streaks from his nose. When Lolo is not "balls to the floor," as the employees call his signature pose, he's often found in the back office, taking care of business.

"Lolo likes to work a lot," said the sisters, especially when other employees bring their dogs to work. He's also known for eating fellow employees' lunches, but nobody holds it against him. After a long, successful career in retail, he's entitled to a few perks.—Lauren Frankfort
