This morning's Women's Wear brings news of major expansion plans for Brian Atwood. Last month, the male-model-turned-shoe-designer sold his company to The Jones Group Inc. He's staying on as creative director, but the new backing means he can start opening stores around the world, starting with a New York location at 655 Madison between 60th and 61st Streets.
The 1,500-square-foot store is currently on track to open in early September, which means we might be in for a Fashion's Night Out debut. It will carry the world's biggest selection of Atwood's collections, including the contemporary B Brian Atwood line, over 50 styles of bags, and some 25-30 exclusive designer styles.
At the same time, Atwood plans to relaunch his website with a new, super-pricey, invite-only VIP section called "The Vault." Here's how he explains the concept to WWD:
[The Vault] has the craziest, most exuberant, exaggerated designs—like python thigh-highs. I wanted to make something really special,” Atwood said. “It’s all about making a woman desire that shoe more than anything. If she didn’t get it, I want her to not be able to stop thinking about it and go get it the next day. I always say my job is done when a woman can’t stop looking at her feet.”But Atwood also hopes to accommodate those of us whose budgets don't leave much room for desperate, crazy love affairs with snakeskin thigh-highs. After the Madison Avenue store is up and running, he'll start thinking about opening a stand-alone B Brian Atwood in Soho.
