Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Steven Alan did it, Diane von Furstenberg did it, and now even the Barneys Warehouse Sale is going online. Like DVF (but unlike Steven Alan), the sale will maintain its offline incarnation, meaning that New Yorkers will still be able to shop the merchandise in person. But they'll also be able to join shoppers around the country on the Barneys Warehouse website for up to 75% off designer goods.
Sign up for the site now, and you'll get access to a day of preview shopping before the sale officially starts. When that might be is still a mystery, but Barneys has announced dates for the offline sale, held at the usual 17th Street location: Thursday, August 23rd through Monday, September 3rd.
Of course, this raises all sorts of questions. If the online sale happens first, will all the good stuff be gone by the time the offline sale rolls around? If the sales happen simultaneously, how will the company decide which merchandise goes online and which goes to the store? Will we see the same markdowns online and in-store? If we had to bet, we'd guess the online sale will have better merchandise but the Chelsea sale will have better prices—but at this point, it's anyone's guess what Barneys has planned.
