Barbara Feinman's East Village Hat Shop, Sketched

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Welcome to Shops Illustrated, a Racked feature in which artist Jennifer Hoyden sketches New York City stores. For each entry, she'll draw a street view, an interior look, and some items currently hanging on the racks.

The decor dial at Barbara Feinman is set to maximum chintz, but if you can get past that, and past the narrow entry crammed with hats upon hats, your effort will pay off because you'll find, of course, more hats. They come in every size, shape, and color, and most of them are handmade by Barbara and her crew. The hats can be altered to fit or custom-made per your specifications. Custom hats! It might be a bit expensive to build a collection of hats, but if you factor in the money saved on blow-outs, it's a wash.
