New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Menswear designer Todd Snyder has worked at places like Polo Ralph Lauren and J.Crew before venturing off and launching his namesake label using techniques commonly associated with English tailoring. Here, the Iowa-born and NYC-based entrepreneur tells us about his favorite by-appointment only shop in the Flatiron district.

Strongarm Clothing & Supply Co. is a hidden gem with the best vintage in the city?bar none. It's by appointment only and is owned by John Gluckow. He was a part of the original RRL team and I met him from my days at Polo. John is the nicest and coolest guy in the business. He's a family guy and a really good person. We usually talk for hours while rummaging through his treasures. He knows more about the history of clothing than professors at design schools. He can look at a garment and tell you the date it was made just by looking at the label, styling and buttons. His knowledge of military clothing is my secret weapon. He travels the world and collects the rarest pieces that I use as inspiration for my collections.
