Hats are priced between $5 and $145 at Eugenia Kim's sample sale, which launched this morning in the Garment District. And if that pricing sounds good, wait till you see the selection. There's a bounty of stylish hats and hair accessories from the main line, as well as the designer's other labels Mr Kim, genie and Genius. Some of these beautiful hats are one-of-a-kind; they're not marked as such, but the staff will point them out if you ask.
The selection includes hats made of cloth, straw and hemp, as well as braided and crocheted paper. It features a huge variety of brim and crown combinations, and bands options that range from lively colors and sassy prints to sophisticated chains and braiding.
The sale is held in the designer's bright showroom, and the friendly staff are more than helpful in finding you additional styles to try on. Hats are displayed on shelves and racks, making them easy to grab and try on. A table in the center of the room contains the hair accessories. There's a full length mirror as well as hand-held mirrors so that you can admire your selections.
While the sale consists largely of spring/summer 2012, there are a couple of bins of felt hats from fall/winter 2011 for $35 which we recommend sorting through. The prices are color-coded with the corresponding price list on the walls, making it easy to figure out how much an item costs. Buy enough hats, and you'll get another one free: Purchases of $300 and $500 receive a complimentary topper.
Restocking will occur throughout the sale, though of course the one-of-a-kind pieces can't be replenished. Some of the hair accessories may be recut for the sale, depending on their popularity and the availability of fabric. The sale runs through Friday, June 22, from 10am—7pm daily. Cash and credit cards accepted.—Pam Krywy
