This afternoon, we popped into the Aloha Rag sample sale currently taking place at 545 Greenwich Street. It's a bit of a trip unless you work in that neighborhood, but hey—it's really nice outside. That being said, most of the merchandise is Aloha Rag samples, and the selection for the other designers advertised is way, way smaller. However, the Aloha Rag goods are, for the most part, all very reasonably priced.
Let's start with the shoe table, since that's the first thing you'll hit when you walk through the door. If you're a size 37.5, there are a pair of Nicholas Kirkwood pumps with your name on them for $239. Size 36s can help themselves to one pair each of Alexander Wang ankle boots and knee-high boots for $179 and $269 respectively. And then there's a size run of Margiela boots in black, brown, and tan for $387. In our opinion, those were the best options, with more elaborate pairs from Balmain and Giuseppe Zanotti coming in second.
And now, onto the women's merchandise. Like we said, most of this is from Aloha Rag. Polo shirts with glitter collars are $38, flared skirts were $45, and sheer and knit cardigans were $145. We spotted a pair of lace shorts for $67, as well as a pair of lace pants for $95. There's also a table full of jeans, where we found pairs priced at $48 and $59.
In slightly less-seasonal wares, there are long-sleeved button downs going for $44, silk long-sleeve shirts with tie collars for $86, long shirtdresses for $89, and wool pants for $62. Keep in mind that almost all of these items are sample sizes, meaning twos and fours will have their pick of the litter. However, Aloha Rag isn't Hervé Léger—a lot of the clothes are on the shapeless side, so size is a little flexible.
Not into any of that? How about some Balmain for you? We spotted a leather blazer for $1,560 (down from $7,800) in a size 40, and a studded army green vest for $1,730. If you'd rather leave with something, oh, significantly more practical, there's a DVF striped blue and gray cardigan for $76, a basic Phillip Lim black dress in a size 2 for $195, and a few pieces from ALC, Clu, Margiela and Sass and Bide.
For the boys, if you need Aloha Rag sweatpants, T-shirts, and things of that nature, this is probably the sale for you. V-neck sweaters are going for $75, denim shirts are $60, tees are $16, chinos start at $30, and sweatpants are $35. On the slightly pricier end of the spectrum, heavy knit striped cardigans are $250 and leathers are $831. Again, think sample sizing.
And just like how the womenswear includes crazy Balmain, the men's has crazy Lanvin: We spotted several embroidered hoodies for $777 (originally $2,585). On a tamer note, Rick Owens leathers are $1,080 (from $3,600), and we saw 48s and 50s in these. Pester blazers are $299, in sizes 4 and 5. We don't really know what that means, but if those are Thom Browne standards then we'd say they're probably mediums or larges.
When we popped by around 11, it was pretty empty inside, which means that you'll be able to try things on in their mock fitting room in the center of the showroom in peace. Also, the staffers are exceptionally pleasant and are more than willing to show you where all the secret zippers are on the Aloha Rag shirtdresses. (Two ways to wear!) For hours and dates, head here.
