After months of rumors, Century 21 has officially announced that it will be opening in the Fulton Street Mall. The department store chain will act as the anchor tenant for the City Point development, a massive two-part project going up at the corner of Dekalb and Flatbush Avenues. It's set to open in 2015.
Fulton Street experts seem to agree that Century 21 is a natural fit for the shopping district, which was known as the Herald Square of Brooklyn before falling into decline in recent decades. As a major department store, Century 21 is big enough to feel like a throwback to the mall's glory days, but as a discounter, it makes sense alongside Fulton's off-price stores. And unlike newcomers like the Gap and H&M, Century 21 has Brooklyn roots. Explains the Wall Street Journal, "Members of the Gindi family, which owns the chain, still live in the borough."
