What do Dolce Vita, PB & Caviar, and Some Odd Rubies have in common? Two things, actually: The three shops used to sit right next to each other on Ludlow Street, and they've all since relocated. Bowery Boogie points out that storefronts on Ludlow Street have been shuffling quite a lot lately, with the abovementioned acting as prime examples.
First up, Dolce Vita announced recently that it would be trading in its Lower East Side home for one in Nolita. Then there's women's boutique PB & Caviar at 151 Ludlow. The shop's owner (and Bill Cosby's daughter) Evin Cosby tweeted that she would be vacating the premises in order to focus on a PB & Caviar clothing line. Lastly, we have Some Odd Rubies, which has decided to move a few doors down from 151 Ludlow to 143 Ludlow.
In a previous post, Bowery Boogie pondered whether the soon-to-be Sandro and Maje locations on Prince Street would be able to handle the "Prince Street vortex," given that at least five stores have closed on the street this past year. But Sandro and Maje have been pretty spot-on with their other locations, and they already have another upscale boutique, Haute Hippie, as a neighbor.
In fact, right now Nolita's looking pretty good for new boutiques. It's not just that Prince Street seems to be turning into the new Ludlow—the trend lately has been towards LES closings and Nolita openings. These last few months have also seen lots of action on Elizabeth Street, which is where the new Dolce Vita recently opened. In addition to that, the Japanese lingerie brand Brandelis, Holland & Sherry Bespoke, and cult Finnish label Ivana Helsinki have all joined the Nolita party.
