On April 7th, Angelo Galasso's Italian bespoke menswear will set up shop inside the Plaza Hotel's Edwardian Room, making it the first time the room will be used as a retail space. We imagine stately doormen with hotel dollies will be on hand to greet Gallaso, a perfectly tailored gentleman with lots of bravado, as he rolls into the iconic New York City building. For his jet-set clientele, which includes the likes of Paul McCartney, King Abdullah of Jordan, and Jay-Z, his collection and store layout can't simply be the same as his Milan, London, and Moscow locations.
Nope, this location is true to New York. The Plaza, known to every taxicab driver and tea-sipping little girl and her grandmother, is historic on its own. Throw in the Edwardian Room, which first opened in 1907 as a men's-only café, and you have the perfect setup.
Since the room is a landmarked property, the Galasso shop preserves its Spanish Renaissance Revival style. A painted ceiling, wrought-iron light fixtures, and grand windows with Central Park and Fifth Avenue views still maintain the Old World sophistication it had a hundred years ago.
But the space still includes Galasso flair, with his gilded monogram fastened to each lacquered showcase. When the store opens, there will also be a seating area to have some champagne, coffee, or a whiskey on the rocks. (It seems like a masculine, whiskey on the rocks kind of place.) To further his stamp of approval, the furniture, like the clothes, are all made in Italy. For a brand that is defined by "tradition in evolution," the introduction of his retail space in this historic landmark reiterates that mission. Now it isn't just Eloise at the Plaza.—Anne Ebani
