Where This Blogger/Casting Director Finds Magnets in Brooklyn

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Julia Samersova somehow manages it all. She's a casting director at Cast Inc. NYC, a mother to a three-year-old "princess," and can also be seen on SCOUTED, E! Network's show about the ins and outs of the world of modeling. Oh, and did we mention that she also runs a website dedicated to kids and street style called Planet Awesome Kid? Needless to say, she's busy. When she has some downtime, she heads to The Brooklyn Museum. On her way out, she pops into the museums newly-renovated shop, where she recently snagged some great new wall decals.

One of my favorite places to shop for cool items is The Brooklyn Museum Shop, and on April 4th, they opened the new and expanded shop. I was just there recently to see the Keith Haring Exhibit (it is NOT to be missed, by the way) and we stopped by the shop afterwards. There were so many cool items to purchase and it was so inspiring right after being so immersed in the world of his amazing life and work.
We loaded up on books, prints, mugs, magnets, and some awesome wall decals too. The newly expanded shop features a special section for Brooklyn-designed products—and I think it's very cool to support local talent. The shop's merchandise will highlight the borough's designers, jewelers, authors, and illustrators, and reflect the diversity of cultures and time periods represented in the museum's collections.
