This week, Jon Caramanica's ostensible topic is the shopping scene along Franklin Street in Greenpoint. He reviews neighborhood anchor Alter, relative newcomer Raised by Wolves, and curiosity shop Kill Devil Hill, but what he really wants to talk about is how much he loves the neighborhood, where everything feels artisanal and accessible. Here's what happens after he admires a Fischer shirt: "Fischer, the salesclerk told me, is made by a clothier who lives a couple of blocks away. I probably could have knocked on her door in a neighborly fashion and asked her to whip up something for me." [NYT]
