A Sephora Makeup Artist Explains How to Wear Tangerine

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If the color prognosticators at Pantone say that "Tangerine Tango" is the shade of 2012, then you can bet that we'll all be wearing reddish-orange for the foreseeable future. Still, it's hard for the layperson to understand how tangerine might translate to a wearable eye palette, or a lip that's not too strong for daytime.

To educate the public, Sephora has been offering free makeovers at its Pantone pop-up in the Meatpacking District all week. Above, watch Sephora PRO lead artist Gilbert Soliz demonstrate three of the tangerine looks that you can get at the pop-up through tomorrow evening. Many thanks to the models, who we recruited straight off Ninth Avenue. (Ashley, the first model, is actually a fashion blogger; she runs a site called Ethel Elaine.)
