Expose Yourself to Fort Greene's Stuart & Wright Sale

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Fitting rooms are a luxury at any sample sale, but we'll call the curtainless fitting rooms at the Stuart and Wright sample sale close enough. When you're trying on the likes of Rachel Comey, Rag & Bone, and A.P.C., some bare skin never hurt anyone. Luckily, we were there midday on the second day of the sale (read: far away from the early bird crowd/ after-work crowd) so we exposed ourselves to only some of Brooklyn rather than all of it. Sometimes saving a—ahem!—butt-load of money on quality items is worth showing a bit of cheek.

You're welcomed into the sale first by a coat check and then by a silly amount of men's outerwear. There's a $250 A.P.C. hunting jacket plus a ton of Band of Outsiders, Our Legacy, and so many others around that price. Basically, if you are a man and come to this sale in order to buy a coat, there is no way you're leaving empty handed.

The number of collared button-downs might rival the number of jackets, but they are much more streamlined in style. That is, there's plaid, more plaid, and denim-like shirts. The only outlier to the formula seems to be the Band of Outsiders striped polo for $125 (down from $250) that says alternately "I'm a Freaks and Geeks extra" or "I'm in third grade." (By no means a bad thing! Third grade was a good year for a lot of us). Shirt size options vary across style and brand (i.e. if there's a small there's a ton of smalls and not too many or no larges and vice versa). It probably also depends on whether or not the brand runs small. Most shirts fall under $100.

Stacks of shoe boxes run down the middle of the men's section. Among others, you can find Quoddy boots for $215 (down from $215) in a 9, 10, and 11 and Rachel Comey rich orange suede oxfords for $100 (down from $325) in a 9 and a 10. There are green hightops for $50 (down from $100) and classic tennis shoes in red and white for $55 (down from $100). Both are Nike and come in 9 and 12s only.

Whew. Now on to the ladies. Your best value is probably the dresses by A. Cheng, which come in easy styles that can be worn for any season. Plus they range between $50 and $95. Lewis Cho dresses are also reasonably priced and tend to fit well, like one $50 asymmetrically striped dress.

If you're looking for something higher end, the sale is downright riddled with Rachel Comey. There's still a little sticker shock when it comes to her price tags plus there was no instant gratification of comparing with the pre-sale because the original tags are gone. But trust us; this is a deal. Some of our favorites from her (and it was tough to pick) include a light jacket with leather detailing that's perfect for finishing up this schizoid winter and then pulling out again next fall. It'll run you $265. For $363 an army green wool jacket that's three pieces in one can be yours. You can pull the outer-layer off and have a collarless cropped jacket and a vest, or you can wear the two pieces together for a cozy winter look. There's a red woven sweater for $190, a blousy shirt for $150, and a close fitting dress in the same fabric for $262. You can also get the world's tiniest skirt for $25 (instead of $168).

There's a slew of Rag & Bone cropped sweaters for $174 (were $350) filtered through some Isabel Marant odds and ends. Finally, there's a bit of Myth Ritual for the more adventurous souls among us. One $99 dress can best be described as Judy Jetson meets Judy Garland minus a lot of fabric.

The sale shorts the bottom-half for both men and women (get it?). Men have a few more options like Rag & Bone jeans in 29, 30, and 36 and Chimala jeans for $50. There are A.P.C. salmon chinos for $118 (down from $235) and something called a "gin pant" for $50 (down from $199). For women, however, there are only a couple of Acne and Rag & Bone jeans in 29s. Skirts of the tweed family are pretty plentiful and will cost you around $70, except for a darling Rachel Comey pleated skirt for $234.

As far as accessories go, there's a handful of scarves littered around the store whose pricing ranges anywhere from $25 to $99, a red canvas bag for $50 from Archival Clothing, and Aandd bags in a large leather folio for $120 and a tote for $115. Also be sure to check out the women's shoes, plus sizing in the photo gallery.

We can't help but feel like we're missing some things, mostly because there was A LOT to look through, and this was the second day. After-work and weekend crowds are sure to flock to it, so head over now. You have until Sunday at 8pm to get the goods.
