The heavily off-season inventory at the Rachel Comey sample sale did not seem to deter shoppers yesterday. When we checked out the sale an hour before close, it was still buzzing with shoe-hungry women, and the stock had clearly been decimated. Past season merchandise was $100 per item (shoes and clothing including) or three for $250, and pieces from the fall/winter collection were priced as marked, with most items under $300 (outerwear is the exception). As usual, the shoes were the star of the sale, eespecially the booties, some styles of which were as low as $100.
The bad news on the fall/winter shoes is that size range in the most desirable styles has been leveled. It looked like there were quite a few single pairs floating around, most of which were tiny. As for the off-season shoes, there was a wider size range left, but not as many styles to pick from. Most of them were sandals. But it sounds like if you strike out on your size here, you may be able to find yourself a pair down the street at the Creatures of Comfort sale.
The past season clothing racks were, frankly, a bit pitiful, and included a lot of leftovers from the last sale. The styles that were plentiful completely lacked the instant gratification factor that most shoppers want in a sale, and were mostly shorts, sleeveless blouses, and summery colors. By the time we got there, the $50 items were all but gone—we spied a few bras, but that was about it.
The selection of fall clothes was attractive, but pricey. Sweaters ranged from $150 to $225, and woolly jackets were a hefty $395. The men's corner of the sale appeared relatively untapped, and the shoes have already been marked down from $100 to $75 a pair or three for $200.
