New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Mimi Plange is the creative director of her namesake label, a women's ready-to-wear line that's based and made in NYC. She recently had the pleasure of dressing Michelle Obama, and celebrities like Rihanna, Vanessa Hudgens, and Estelle have also been spotted wearing her creations. Here, she tells us about Hom, her favorite little shop in Bay Ridge.

When, I first moved to New York from California, I made it a point to get lost from time to time and explore various neighborhoods in and around the city. After a friend introduced me to her Bay Ridge neighborhood on my way to visit one day, I decided to take a scenic detour and stumbled upon a store called Hom. The sun had gone down, and I remember there being many candles lit up inside a store that looked like a foreign market from another country...or maybe planet.
I was immediately drawn into this quirky artisan shop and was tickled by the magical atmosphere and beautiful selection of seductive candles, tables, and things. My eyes fixated on the plethora of mini chandeliers that were hanging on the walls, from the ceilings, and sitting on the floor. I now have several of those hanging chandeliers in various sizes all over my own apartment. Hom is a treasure cove of jewelry, door knobs, full and mini-size wooden furniture, and so many offbeat lamps, frames and magazine racks. There's even a mini eatery in the back.
