If last night's preview of the Zadig & Voltaire sample sale at 260 Fifth Avenue was any indication, today's opening to the public is sure to be one thing: madness. Ever since hitting New York City in 2009, the brand has been a cult fave for Parisian style mavens with a thing for studs. And since all that the merchandise is now marked down up to 80% off, you can expect to find a crowd.
Once inside, you'll find several different price lists for spring/summer and fall/winter items for women, men, and children. Instead of basic categories like tops, dresses, and bottoms, they're broken down further by material, style, etc. For example, women's outerwear has several price tags: Jackets are $150, blazers are $190, parkas are $280, wool coats are $250, leathers are $300, and furs are $400. While prices are still a bit steep, there are still some major deals to be scored.
When you enter, the women's racks are lined up on the right side of the room. Tops range in price from $60 to $150, dresses are $75 to $200, and bottoms are $50 to $200. Even as of last night, the selection seemed to be sparse and did contain a few items from last year's sale.
There were barely any dresses left, just a few small sizes hanging in the outerwear section, and most of the denim came in larger sizes. That said, you'll want to get there early for the following highlights: a long metallic tweed overcoat for $230, a lightweight powder blue bomber for $150, and a beige printed blouse for $130 from the collection with Erin Wasson.
The accessories tables sit at the far back and right side of the room. A bandeau bra only costs $15, but a cool pair of python cowboy boots will set you back $380. There are also camo-print scarves for $40, leather belts, and bags aplenty, like a metallic tote with a flying skull detail for $130.
Over in the menswear area, tops are $38 to $160, bottoms are $35 to $80, and outerwear is $150 to $300. However, the same pattern from the women's section seemed to emerge in men's: Small sizes are outnumbered by larger sizes. Keep an eye out for military jackets with badge appliqués for $150, a gray wool sweater with black leather elbow pads for $95, and a basic henley for $38.
As you make your way to the dressing rooms in the back, don't forget to pick up something for your little one (or someone else's little one) in the children's department. That is, if you have room in your armload. We were told by a staffer that there won't be any re-stocking during the sale, so make sure that pile is hefty now.
The sale runs until 8pm today, from 10am to 7pm tomorrow and Saturday, and from 11am to 6pm on Sunday. Consult the dealfeed for more details, and check out the gallery above for some of the merchandise.
