Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
The Gant sample sale is a guy-eccentric event, but we always score a few totally covetable items off the womenswear rack (that is, after we squeeze past racks and racks of plaid, and of course, guys who love plaid). But this time around, it was nothing but size medium, previous-season rejects.
In the far back left of the showroom, behind the rugby polos and next to the webbed belts, you'll spy about six cramped racks of goods for the ladies. We've seen nearly everything on offer at previous sample sales—some of it already lives in our closet—so there was nothing to get all hot and bothered over.
There was pretty much one rack for each type of item, with all sizes and styles mixed in together. One rack was chock full of plaid button-front shirts for $45—think hipster flannels and ruffled school girl styles. That rack also included a few dark floral blouses and some chambray tops, again, mostly in mediums.
Nearby, you'll find knits and sweaters ranging for $20 to $50, including rugby tops and V-neck wool sweaters. All skirts and bottoms are also $50, including preppy chinos, pleated wool skirts, a few pairs of patterned denim, and some cropped trousers. If you decide to dig through these, you're ambitious.
You'll probably have the best luck on the rack of outerwear and dresses. A stellar coccoon jacket was $150 and a varied collection of cropped gray blazers was $175. Among the dresses, the price is right for wool and cotton pieces, which are just $40, but we didn't catch anything noteworthy. (There was, if you're interested, a pink number with an exposed zipper for $75.) We also spotted a series of sequined dresses that have been percolating at the Gant sales since at least 2009—always at the same price point
Among the accessories, there are a few ladies wallets for $25 to $50 and some decidedly untrendy handbags for $50 to $75. The pick of the litter are the $7 sweater tights, including a few edgy pairs by the Michael Bastian for Gant line.
All in all, it's probably not worth fighting through the hordes of guys to scope out this selection, unless of course, your goal is to meet a horde of guys. The sale will stay open through Saturday at 5pm; check the dealfeed for more info.—Kiran
