When we arrived at Loro Piana's sample sale yesterday a few hours after opening, the room was moderately filled with people sorting through the luxury brand's delectable cashmere and leather. The sale includes women's and men's apparel, scarves, footwear, accessories, and a small collection of fur vests and scarves, almost all at 40% off.
Of course, that's not an enormous discount, and even with the markdowns, prices are high. For example, you'll find women's cashmere scarves in beautiful colors for $823 (originally $1,371). Across the entire table dedicated to scarves, the least expensive one we could find was $425 after the discount.
Women's sweaters, which are marked 50% off, are folded on tables in the center of the room. As for apparel, it's separated into sizes 40 (small), 42 (medium), and 44 (large), with coats, blouses, pants, and skirts hung on racks along the outside of the room. A white blouse we spotted was $597 (originally $995), and cashmere-lined trench coats and blazers were $2,397 (originally $3,995).
The small selection of gloves is priced at $508 a pop (originally $725), while skull caps are $245 (originally $350). Leather handbags were $2,517 (originally $3,595). The selection of shoes is small, ranging from a few pairs of sandals to quilted cashmere slippers, and the available sizes also ran toward small. The opposite is true for women's belts, where the sizes are mostly large and priced at $417 (originally $595).
The men's apparel section contains a broad cross section of items from Loro Piana's casual and sportswear lines: pants, sweaters, shirts, polo shirts, scarves, shoes, sports jackets and outwear. There's also the perennial offering of suiting bolts. Expect discounts of 40% off here too.
Any duplicate pieces will be brought out during the sale, but don't expect a ton of restocking—what you see is what you get. In years past, the discounts have gotten better as the sale has gone on. We can't confirm that this will happen again, but if you're willing to wait, you might just be in luck.
Final details: For the odd item that hasn't been discounted, Soiffer Haskin staffers are available with a calculator to help you figure out the sale price. Expect to check your coats and bags upon arrival. The sale runs through Thursday, October 4th until 5pm.—Pam Krywy
