There's no Critical Shopper today, but there is a round-up of independent hair salons in New York City. Stephanie Rosenbloom explains that the city used to be dominated by name-brand mega-salons like Vidal Sassoon and Sally Hershberger, but now there's a whole host of little boutique spots offering a more individualized experience. She rounds up five, including Fringe on the Lower East Side and the Whittemore House Salon in the West Village, and the paper throws in a slideshow for good measure. [NYT]
