Lingerie retailer Journelle opened its warehouse sale in Union Square to VIP guests today, so we wrangled our way in for a preview. The sale is housed in a smallish room that's long and narrow, with a communal dressing room in the back. For now, all merchandise is 50% off retail prices. As the sale goes on, discounts will grow to 70% off.
Labels we found on the racks included La Perla, Chantelle, Eberjey, Elle Macpherson Intimates, Wolford, Fleur of England, and Stella McCartney, among others. Eberjey and Elle Macpherson offer more affordable options in loungewear and lingerie. Eberjey bras start at $16, Macphereson at $30. Stella McCartney bras start at $65—worth noting before you start stockpiling at random.
Bras, underwear, garter belts, chemises, robes, rompers and hosiery are well-stocked in all sizes. Bras line the walls on racks in sizes 28A-32F, while underwear sit in bins on tables in sizes small through large. A cotton robe by Eberjey caught our eye for $50. Another great loungewear option was a silk and lace romper by Mimi Holiday for $72.
Corsets start at $39, and garter belts at $29. A standout piece was the VPL Insertion Bra, a bandage-style bralette with thick straps and stretchy material for $47. There weren't any push-up bras or strapless varieties to be found, and staffers told us they were not included in markdowns. Though the sale doesn't provide many options for strictly functional underwear, there are plenty of pretty pieces in silk, lace, and micro mesh.
The best part of the sale, though, might be the shopping experience. Lingerie sample sales can be tough because it's hard to find properly-fitting bras without a decent dressing room, not to mention some guidance from an informed salesperson. Journelle's warehouse sale doesn't offer the same sort of service you'd get in-store, but it does have a fitting room staffed by an attendant who can help you find your size and offer suggestions.
Cash and credit cards are accepted. Much of the back-stock merchandise is already on the racks but, Journelle has the sale space for two weeks, and the sale will go on until the inventory runs out. We suggest coming in soon because there was a sizable crowd of shoppers this afternoon. Then again, if you'd rather shop for underwear in your underwear, note that the online sales starts Tuesday, January 17th.—Apneet Kaur
