All-Vegan Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Opens on Ludlow

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Last week, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics opened at 174 Ludlow Street, adding vegan beauty to a neighborhood that already has vegan desserts (at Babycakes), vegan snacks (at Teany), and vegan shoes watched over by four cats (at Moo Shoes.) The brand was born on the LES in 2004, but up until now, it's only been available to professional make-up artists.

The new store carries products like Lip Tar, which goes on like a gloss but dries like a stain, as well as intensely pigmented nail polish and liquid airbrush foundation. Staffers can offer private consultations and makeovers on the spot—handy, since unlike, say, mascara application, airbrushing isn't the kind of thing most people learned at sleepover parties in seventh grade. There's also a mixing bar where shoppers can put together custom shades.
