Security Is High at the New Century 21 in Columbus Circle

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

At Century 21's soft opening today, shoppers with VIP cards passed through the security-ridden entrance-way to discounted designer bliss. As for passersby without cards, they weren't so lucky. When Century 21 says VIP, they mean VIP.

Although signing up for a membership at any of their locations is actually quick and easy, it seems you can't sign up on the spot at this location today. We suggest trying their Cortlandt Street store or waiting till tomorrow, since signing up online is also a no-go (we tried). According to security, shoppers will also receive 100 points just by signing up for a card.

The store seems to be stocked with some good merchandise. We noticed shoppers leaving the store with big paper Century 21 bags. Guess even VIPs like a good deal.—Katherine Park
