Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Century 21 officially soft-opens tomorrow, but only to VIP cardholders. Luckily, the designer discount store is fairly open-minded about the definition of the term "VIP." West Side Rag noticed staffers signing people up outside the store this weekend, as did the Shophound. The former breaks it down like this: "To become a VIP, head to Broadway and 66th street and sign a piece of paper. It is truly that easy." Signing up online is another option if trekking to 66th takes too much effort.
West Side Rag also reports that Century 21 has peer-pressured neighboring shops into stepping up their game: The Gap down the block just hid its entire facade under a sheet of white plastic for renovations. Frequent customers should note that it will remain open despite the makeover in progress.
