As Hurricane Irene Approaches, Supplies Disappear from Stores

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Yesterday began with people lining up to buy discounted designer goods at Barneys and ended with people lining up to buy supplies in advance of what's supposed to be the worst hurricane to hit the region in decades. Awl founder Choire Sicha noted a queue forming at Trader Joe's, and we've heard reports of similar hoarding taking place at Whole Foods.

You can find a straightforward, comprehensible hurricane supply shopping list on McBrooklyn. If you still need a flashlight and/or batteries, better act fast. A tipster reports overhearing this in Cobble Hill's Winn Home and Beauty: "We're going to make a million dollars on D batteries alone today."
