If you're looking for designer markdowns and you just can't face the raging maelstrom that is the Barneys Warehouse Sale, take heart: There's another, quieter warehouse sale taking place right this minute at Bird in Park Slope. Maybe it was the rain, or maybe it was the timing, but when we stopped by the sale shortly after it opened at noon, the place was much less chaotic then last year. Owner Jennifer Mankins was helping customers, newcomers were carefully stacking their umbrellas in an urn, and a little blond baby was toddling around with absolutely no fear of getting stepped on. The scene was downright civilized.
Let's talk big-ticket items first: Once again, this sale include at least one marked-down PS1 bag from Proenza Schouler. We only spotted a single purple tote ($1499), but Twitterer @jessicaabroad reports seeing a green carryall as well. Other women's designer merchandise up front included a Suno jacket ($89 marked down from $380), Alexander Wang leather shorts ($259 from $1025), a gray ikat Tucker tunic ($139 from $280), and a bunch of Rachel Comey velvet dresses ($149 from $605.) Mankins also pointed out some favorites: A sleek Phillip Lim jumpsuit in navy ($239 from $475) and a wool Zero + Maria Cornejo coat ($359 marked down from $1455.)
Rachel Comey was well represented in the shoe section, where we found platforms, wedges, and a pair of leopard print heels for the slightly miraculous price of $89 (down from $375). The other standout deal was on K Jacques sandals, modest little flats that usually cost totally non-modest prices; here, a pair that went for $230 was just $99. Dieppa Restrepo oxfords were $199 (from $285), APC sandals were $139 (from $275), Common Projects heels included a gray suede pair for $209 (from $425), and printed Suno x Loeffler Randall sandals were $109 (down from $460.) As in every Bird sale we've ever seen, there were also Worishofer slip-ons ($29 from $58) and No. 6 clogs ($139 from $209.)
More casual buys in the back room include shorts from J Brand and Current/Elliot ($49 and $59 respectively) as well as a whole rack of denim. If you happen to be sweating those J Brand jeans in crazy colors, make a beeline for the turquoise ones, now $59 from $190. Or go a little swankier and pick up a pair of Zero + Maria Cornejo silk pants, $139 (were $550). We're also really hoping the flower-print Isabel Marant balloon pants find a good home; they're man-repellingly bold and priced to move at $89 (were $360; only available in size 8.) Pair the denim with a Thakoon print top ($179 from $735), a Rag & Bone floral button-down ($99 from $195), or an Isabel Marant sweatshirt in a sort of amoeba design for $79 (from $335.)
Bird's menswear ranges from classic prep to the masculine equivalent of those Marant pants. Bolder boys should try the Comme des Garçons cardigan-shirt ($59 from $256) or the gorgeous chalkboard plaid Zero + Maria Cornejo winter coat ($219 from $870). Preppies should aim for the Steven Alan Fair Isle cardigan ($69 from $265; not available in size small) or the plaid Billy Reid coat, which would look perfect with a thermos and a pennant at a Yale-Harvard game in 1923.
Pertinent final details: There's a dressing room with a waiting list, so try to sign up before you start wandering. Also, with the exception of some merchandise that will be arriving tomorrow, everything is out on the floor.
