Barneys First Look: Lots of Shoes and One Lone Lanvin Purse

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Once again, the folks at Barneys were kind enough to give us an early sneak peek at the Barneys Warehouse Sale two days before the bi-annual event kicks off. Just like last year, this was a viewing-only privilege—meaning no shopping allowed (so no crying foul), but it's a great opportunity for us to impart all the crucial details to you. The warehouse sale staffers were still hard at work unloading all the merchandise and stocking the shelves, but we were able to capture a pretty comprehensive idea of what's in store in terms of shoes. And the bombshell: There are bags this year.

Let's start with the bags, which are located in large bins to the left of the shoes. First off, we managed to unearth four designer bags in the jumble, but only four. Look for two shearling-lined Nina Ricci hobos ($799 for black and $559 for grey), one slightly beat-up silver python Devi Kroell hobo ($995 from $3490), and a small, but kind of scuffed camel Lanvin purse ($899 from $2520). The rest are a mix of Botkier styles (mostly $250 and under), Tano for Barneys duffles (around $189), and some Marc by Marc Jacobs hobos and big shoulder bags ($309 and under).

On to shoes, which include Nicholas Kirkwood x Rodarte carved wedges priced at $1149 (from $2865) for the gold brocade and at $1119 (from $2790) for the Chinois blue and white print—both about $500 lower than they were at the Barneys in-store spring sale. We also found one of the red/purple/cream platforms from last year in the size eight section. They are priced the same as the start of the sale last year—$695 (from $1645). Sneaky, sneaky, Barneys.

There is also a ton of Lanvin: Camel wedge sandals ($499 from $1245), black patent platform sandals ($319 from $790), caramel brown platform sandals ($439 from $1095), and huarache weave wedges ($569 from $1420). The Gianvito Rossi for Altuzarra heels were also super sexy. The python wedges are $459, the pointy-toed black shooties are $308 (from $770), and the strappy buckle wedges are $559 (from $1405). Alexander Wang makes an appearance with a few styles: The Kasia wedges ($219 from $550), knotted platform sandals ($259 from $595), and stacked heel chukkas (also $250 from $595).

We also happened upon striped two-toned uber-high wedges from Pierre Hardy ($389 from $980), huarache kitten heels from Givenchy ($439 from $740), Manolo Blahnik shooties ($319 from $795), 3.1 Phillip Lim flatforms ($249 from $625), gold Alaïa gladiator stilettos ($389 from $965), and Chloé platform sandals ($259 from $645).

Along with the usual Co-Op styles, the Jean Michel Cazabat and Chloë Sevigny x Opening Ceremony heels were amongst the best deals. The Cazabat perforated leather flats are $89 (from $236) and camo platform heels are $129 (from $325). The Chloë Sevigny x Opening Ceremony mid-calf boots are $199 (from $295) and the Mary Jane platforms (in black and navy) are $159 (from $395).

When we departing the preview, boxes upon boxes of heels, platforms, wedges, and boots were still waiting to be unpacked, so all this is really just an initial sampling. You'll have to line up early Thursday morning to experience the full selection. Next up, womenswear. Stay tuned....
