At long last, 181 Orchard Street has a new tenant: A shop devoted entirely to hoodies. The space has sat empty since gothic menswear shop Bblessing closed last July. When it shuttered, Bblessing's manager blamed its demise on the bad real estate vibes emanating from the half-finished development across the street. Looking back, though, it feels significant that Bblessing's similarly goth neighbor Convent closed last year as well. In fact, those few blocks between Houston and Delancey have seen a number of closings lately, with some of the more interesting shops reappearing in smaller spaces farther south. But if the north-of-Delancey region is getting too expensive for pricey but personality-filled boutiques, will a sweatshirt store really fare any better?
