Filipa Fino Gets Personalized on the Upper East Side

New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Since departing Vogue a few months ago, Filipa Fino, the magazine's former Senior Accessories Editor, has kept the fashion industry wondering what what she'll do next. According to Fino's rep, she's consulting with a few brands on collaborations and product development and is about to "launch a new digital proposition that will have the world see fashion as a complement to accessories, as opposed to the conventional other way around." While the specifics may be hazy, what we do know is that she loves Il Papiro, an UES shop that she's been visiting since her days in college.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love anything personalized. It is that extra touch that makes the difference between the common and the truly chic. But in a city where everyone already owns the latest trend, it is challenging to find that something unique. I discovered Il Papiro many years ago while still in college. It is a tiny store on the Upper East Side that sells the most exquisite stationary products from Florence.
Think boring? Think again. From marbleized desk sets in the most beautiful hues (with matching pencils), to photo albums and frames, to notebooks and folders, to the most beautiful storage boxes, each product has that distinct European flair that makes you want to write on good a old proper desk, rather than your MacBook Air. But my favorite item is a two initial wax seal set. There is just something regal about seeing your initials stamped in wax. Really can't get more personalized than that.
