Through 7pm tonight, the ladies behind limited-edition online boutique Of a Kind are presiding over an extremely dangerous sample sale on the tenth floor of the Ace Hotel. Why is it dangerous? Because Of a Kind founders Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo have excellent taste in emerging talent, and their Ace suite is stocked with adorable clothing and accessories priced about as low as a young designer can handle without going broke.
Each week on Of a Kind, Cerulo and Mazur announce a new piece created by an up-and-comer—for example, a lariat necklace by Erica Weiner, who sells antique and refurbished jewelry in Nolita, or a striped top by Weiner's Nolita neighbors at Thomas Sires. They only produced a small batch of the item in question, and when it's gone, it's gone. As such, you won't find the entire Of a Kind back catalog at the sale. We didn't see the Weiner necklace at last night's preview, though we did spot the Sires shirt, as well as a yarn-and-gold statement necklace by Erin Considine and a wood-and-pyrite piece by Sophie Monet. While the sale goes up to 70% off, both necklaces were only 30% off—but cute enough that you'll be sorely tempted anyway.
Most of the Ace suite, though, is filled with other pieces by Of a Kind favorites. There's a big selection of Tucker mostly priced at over $150, a rack of immensely wearable prints from Thomas Sires (we liked a $70 skirt), and a stand of paint-dripped silk tops and dresses from recent-ish DailyCandy feature Rachel Rose ($70 to $120). In the back room, black-and-white geometric pieces from Mary Meyer sprawl over one bed, while the other bed is covered in colorful tops and shorts from Ace & Jig. That's where you'll find the best deals of the sale: We walked away with a breezy $40 top, and we had a hard time convincing ourselves not to buy the matching shorts.
