Taking advantage of the ghost town that is New York on a holiday weekend, we dropped by the store-wide Barneys New York sale yesterday to check out the ladies' shoes marked up to 60% off. While most of the city was enjoying a day at the beach or a gluttonous barbequed meat-filled afternoon, we—along with a small, but determined crowd—were checking out the goods on both the designer and CO-OP floors. Granted, it's not the Warehouse Sale on final markdown day, but this is when the selection of styles is at optimum level. Plus, what better way to recoup from a three-day holiday weekend than peruse some shoe porn?
First off, we may have been a tad hasty in categorizing the Nicholas Kirkwood x Rodarte wedges as expensive at the Rodarte sample sale. Compared to the Barneys sale price of $1669 (from $2790) for the blue and white Chinois-print wedges, the $750 tag at the sample sale seems quite reasonable. We drooled over the bronze embossed-leather style, too. Fingers crossed that they make it to the Warehouse Sale (if there is a Warehouse Sale, that is).
Moving down into the three-digit deal arena: Just-Nicholas Kirkwood python peep-toe shooties are marked down to $859 (from $1425), Lanvin rattan-wedge platforms are $569 (from $1420), Chanel distressed-leather slit-heel wedges are $659 (from $1100), and Christian Louboutin black studded peep-toe mules are $559 (from $926).
There are items that arouse less sticker shock: Pierre Hardy sexy black strappy wedges for $359 (from $600), another pair of Pierre Hardy patent yellow and white dance heels for $269 (from $700), Prada perforated leather clogs for $279 (from $695), Lanvin python and rattan stacked-heel Mary Janes for $379 (from $950) and a bunch of Marni, Manolo Blahnik, Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu and Gianvito Rossi for Altuzarra heels discounted to the $300-ish range.
Don't forget to head to the more casual CO-OP floor for additional shoe deals. On the shelves, we came across Jean-Michel Cazabat taupe pointy-toe perforated-leather wedges for $170, Alexander Wang chukka wedges for $249, Opening Ceremony Mary Jane platforms for $289 (from $490) and Carven rusty-orange pumps for $198 (from $500). If the Nicholas Kirkwood x Rodartes were on the, um, "aspirational" level, there are always the Rodarte x Opening Ceremony styles—namely the black and white saddle-shoe platform marked to $299 (from $730).
We had a few extra minutes to spare, so we did a quick once-over of the womenswear markdowns on the CO-OP floor, too. Notables include: An Alexander Wang duster cape-let for $359 (from $595) and a terracotta crushed silk and metallic patch-detail dress for $279 (from $695), a Theyskens' Theory lovely blue and white watercolor print low-back mini-frock for $169 (from $435), a Carven royal blue boxy cropped blazer jacket for $229 from $585, an Isabel Marant red ruffle top with gold-flecked detail for $259 (from $430), and Valentine Gauthier blush pink dress with a seashell waistline and delicate shoulder beading for $159 (from $405 and it's a nice last-minute summer wedding frock).
The summer sale runs through August and a staffer indicated that there may be one additional markdown. Then, "everything will be packed up and shipped out". To the Warehouse sales, perhaps? We can always hope.
