Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Style.com called Tess Giberson "one of New York's brainiest designers" and after browsing her Soho sample sale, we'd have to agree. Her unassuming storefront hints at her design style inside: Sleek, smart, minimalistic, and beyond cool. And right now it's all on sale.
The entire collection is done in a smart monochrome—sleek blacks, whites, and neutrals, with flashes of blue every now and then, plus a few surprises in the basics—like the hot pink leggings. There were some fantastic black leather pieces, including a $400 vest (formerly $1065), a $690 jacket (formerly $1580), a $220 skirt, a pair of shorts for $190, and some über-cool $590 leather leggings (formerly $1450)—unfortunately not really in our buy-on-a-whim price range, but if you want to splurge on cool leather-wear, look no further.
There were some nice dresses, too, including a chic white tank dress ($200, down from $435) and a black paneled dress ($100, down from $262). A selection of pants, ringing in at $50, $80, and $100, sits right next to some outerwear, like an olive coat with slitted sleeves ($350, formerly $895). We also really liked a few of the non-leather black jackets—there's a cool asymmetrical zip jacket for $320 (formerly $740) and a well-done blazer for $210 (formerly $590).
Basics include tanks (mesh back tanks are $70, down from $285; racerback paneled tanks are $50, down from $185), cardigans (mostly $100), leggings (like the aforementioned $50 hot pink pair), and scarves and belts ($20).
While the basics are tempting at these discounts, we're thinking about skipping out on a few in favor of buying one of the more expensive pieces—so worth it. They might not be fun summery prints, but a lot of these pieces will be in style forever. When we stepped in on Tuesday the store was pretty well-stocked, but the sale runs through Saturday, so we recommend getting there sooner rather than later.—Lauren Budorick
