New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. When Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen need help figuring out what to wear, they turn to Danielle Nachmani. She outfitted the twins for their CFDA appearance and also just styled the Textile by Elizabeth and Jame campaign. Her recommendation: Bangally in the West Village.
Bangally on Greenwich Avenue is a store filled with jewelry, shoes, artifacts and more, all from Africa. The store is incredible and the man who owns it tells the most insane stories about growing up there. I went into Bangally by a referral from a friend when I was prepping a shoot that was all Peter-Beard–inspired. I had walked by it for years and never knew it existed. Now it's a go-to whenever I get creative freedom on a job.Update: Bangally has actually relocated to West Chelsea. Find it on W. 29th Street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues.
