New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Steven Kolb is the executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, which means he's in charge of the American fashion industry's governing body—not a small task. He's got a background in the non-profit domain, where he worked as the executive director of MTV's Staying Alive Foundation, raising funds for HIV and AIDS awareness. And he's also got a sense of humor: According to his Twitter biography, he's an "accidental fashion drone" who is "masquerading as Executive Director of Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)." Kolb tells us that when he needs hair and skin supplies, he looks no further than Gideon's Drugs, an independent shop right around the corner from his Garment District office.
I work in the Garment District and Gideon's Drugs is just across the street from my office. I like it because it is one of the few independent pharmacies still left. It is a friendly, service-orientated alternative to the always-crowded big chains that are turning into mini-marts. It has a good selection of hair and skin products, as well as all your basic supplies, and the pharmacist always goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable.· CFDA [Official Site]
