Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
If you're like us, you tried to sneak out to the Mara Hoffman sale during your lunch break today, knowing it would be impossible to make it in and out of Opening Ceremony in such a short amount of time. And if you're like us, you left disappointed because of the very long, very slow line. (We'll probably go back later.)
Don't be discouraged—there is no shortage of goods there. The whole place was screaming with Mara Hoffman's trademark bright prints. A lot of covetable vibrant frocks rang in around $125, with longer dresses around $175 or $200. Most of the bikinis were priced at $75, although there weren't a ton of them, but some of the ones we found were pretty cool. (There are also a few bins of super-discounted bikinis and other assorted garments on the floor for $20 or $40 each, although those are pretty picked over.) Several solid-colored staples could be found in every color—the high-waisted tap shorts, formerly $238, were $75 in yellow, black and olive (at least), and we found the twist-front maxi dress ($200, down from $561) both in black and cobalt.
We found a few super-steals, too: An inexplicably ignored tank dress was priced at an unbelievable $25, and there were some great shorts and tops for $50. Alas, the line was wrapped from the front to the back of the store and back to the register at the front, and it was moving very slowly, so we had to leave empty-handed...for now. (The aforementioned $25 tank dress is still there, but it is now hidden. Don't even try.) — Lauren Budorick
