It's been a big month for Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet. Two weeks ago, she gave birth to her second child, and two days ago, she opened a store on Madison Avenue. The timing was just a matter of fate, says Bendet, who jumped on the "jewel box" of a space as soon as she heard the lease was available, figuring Upper East Side real estate waits for no baby.
The new shop isn't the flagship—for now, the Bryant Park store retains that honor—but it does carry the full Alice + Olivia collection, include kids' clothes and shoes. It also features a themed vintage section which Bendet plans to stock from different cities each month. The goal, she says, is "to bring downtown uptown." The neighborhood does have its consignment stores, but a contemporary boutique with vintage mixed in still feels a little unusual on Madison.
Next up for Bendet, aside from sleep-training and diaper-changing: Moving her business into a 24,000-square-foot office space at 450 W. 14th Street, where Alice + Olivia will eventually open a store.
